I can't speak for others, but I have incredibly wide and varied music tastes - early music, choral, chamber and orchestral including contemporary composers, folk, modern jazz and even progressive rock. The Beatles and solo albums are only a small part of my collection. If I want to purchase and listen to solo Ringo records I certainly will, and let's be clear they haven't sold well since the early 70s, so what's the harm? Who's being conned? I have realistic expectations, and I find them pretty enjoyable to be honest. But I would go further and say that there are half a dozen solo Beatles albums that among my favourite of all time. I think the best of them do compare with Beatles albums, and I think that there is a lazy trope that it has all been a massive disappointment since they split. But I don't find the Plastic Ono Band, Imagine, Band on the Run, All Things Must Pass, Cloud 9 or Flaming Pie, etc even remotely disappointing. Their individual talent didn't suddenly disappear.
As an aside, I actually thought his remake of Love Me Do was pretty enjoyable. I remember playing that album driving back from a race I did well in, and it still brings back great memories. He was making a point, too: namely his omission from the main release.James Percivalhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14736990790811230274noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6695919221523064440.post-61993753328439973582016-11-11T17:25:17.650+01:002016-11-11T17:25:17.650+01:00Is Ringo a stand-alone talent? I think it was his remake of Love Me Do that did it for me... and how could anyone defend a song like Postcards From Paradise? Surely there's better music to seek out in the short time you have alive than a song like that? Or is it simply because I still can't get over the sounds on Revolver and Abbey Road etc that I even know about a song like Postcards From Paradise? (or Biker Like An Icon, or Meat City, or Devil's Radio).dbhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01359947978488682150noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6695919221523064440.post-2209521718971199992016-11-09T16:27:35.631+01:002016-11-09T16:27:35.631+01:00I bought Ringo Rama (2003) as an impulse buy when ...I bought Ringo Rama (2003) as an impulse buy when it came out and thought it a good record. Encouraged by that I then tracked down some of the previous ones and I really rate Vertical Man (1997) - even though it apparently sold really poorly. Encouraged by those I bought Choose Love (2005) and liked that too. I stopped buying at that point, but I do think Ringo had a very good team around him including Mark Hudson.
Nothing is likely to top Ringo (1973), however...James Percivalhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14736990790811230274noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6695919221523064440.post-51203035396515944912016-11-09T11:12:42.330+01:002016-11-09T11:12:42.330+01:00Y Not is brilliant!
