White album teaser

cryptic message

Representatives from the press has been sent this somewhat cryptic message, asking them to save the date September 26, 2018. An invitation will follow. According to one such representative, Roger Friedman, this is an event where details of the upcoming 50th anniversary edition of The Beatles' self titled "white album" will be revealed. Friedman writes that the event will take place in New York.

We have also been told from another source that the track list for the various editions will be revealed on September 25th, so perhaps the event in question is a listening party and an opportunity to interview Giles Martin, who is Apple's go to guy when it comes to remixing sound.

Mark Lewisohn: Q&A from Beatleweek 2018

Thanks to Jimmie Rudolfsson, we have the full Q&A session with Beatles author Mark Lewisohn from last week in Liverpool, divided into three segments, totalling 96 minutes. You may be disappointed to find out that publication of volume two in his ongoing biography trilogy (which now seems to consist of four volumes, the final one going up to and including 1974) is no longer aiming for a 2020 publication date, but may take longer. Perhaps next year he can give us an estimate.

Still, there are lots of interesting questions asked by the audience, only surpassed by Mark's detailed answers. I have assembled all three segments into one playlist for your convenience.

Eddie the dog

Fan photo of Paul with his dog Eddie, at the gates of his house in St. John's Wood, 1968.
Most fans will know that Paul McCartney used to have an Old English Sheepdog called Martha, mostly thanks to the fact that the dog is in lots of well known photos, and she has her own song, "Martha My Dear" on the Beatles' "White album".
Less well known is Paul's other dog from the same time, a Yorkshire terrier called Eddie! So here are a few photos of him.

These are from Paul's dad's house in Wirral. Is it Eddie? Looks a bit big.

Mad day out, the final photos inside Paul's dome in the garden, Paul with Martha, while Ringo is petting Eddie.
After having released "Martha My Dear" Paul may have felt sorry for Eddie, who didn't have a song of his own. To rectify this he composed "There You Are, Eddie," possibly in December 1968, while visiting Hunter Davies in Portugal. Never released, the song was performed three times by Paul during the "Get Back"-sessions on January 24th, 1969.

There you are, Eddie
(McCartney)

There you are, Eddie – Eddie – Eddie,
there you are, Eddie – Eddie, you dog

You pretend to be in with the in-crowd,
and you think that you’re one of the boys,
but you know you’ve been barking too loud,
and you know that I can’t stand the noise

There you are, Eddie – Eddie – Eddie,
there you are, Eddie – Eddie, you dog

You pretend to be in with the in-crowd,
and you think that you’re one of the boys,
but you know you’ve just been barking too loud,
and you know that I can’t stand the noise

There you are, Eddie – Eddie – Eddie,
there you are, Eddie – Eddie, you dog
Eddie, you dog, Eddie, you dog

You'll find the most complete version of this impromptu rendition several places over at YouTube, for instance here. On this version, John joins in and encourages Paul to sing the song for other Beatles pets, so it turns into "There you are, Tiger", for Ringo's dog and ends up with "There you are, Mimi", referring to John's cat.

Seems most photos of Eddie were taken by fans.
Hunter Davies, who wrote the official Beatles biography in 1968 believed that the song was about himself. Paul, Linda og Heather spent some time at Hunter Davies' holiday home on the coast of Algarve in Portugal in December 1968, and his account is: "I remember one tune he played for me in Portugal, which he had written on the lavatory (he rarely went there without his guitar), which was called There You Go Eddie. Just a short verse, and I don't think he ever completed it. He had discovered that my first Christian name is Edward, something I've always kept quiet.".

1969 photo by Linda: Eddie with Paul (and Heather?)
Despite Davies' beliefs, the song is very likely about Paul's dog, which should be evidenced by the line about barking, and the fact that John and Paul started talking about other Beatle pets during the 1969 rendition.

The two dogs again.

Ebay opportunity: Egypt Station on green vinyl

Green vinyl, exclusively to Spotify customers who favour Paul McCartney
Okay so here's the deal: there is an exclusive green variety of Paul McCartney's upcoming vinyl 2LP "Egypt Station" available to a very specific group of people: Greedy ebay dealers based in USA and Europe. Through these links, it's possible to order this special edition, and here's a good thing: It only ships to USA and Europe! Can you believe it?

Capitol Records are literally feeding us this golden opportunity to make a lot of dough from international hardcore McCartney fans! Of course, these are willing to shell out top dollar for this item, which Capitol Records (praise their marketing dept) are unwilling to sell to them!
So now, all we need to do is order these records, and when they arrive, we can make a whole lotta dough on ebay! Because, of course we'll ship anywhere, as long as the money's good!

This special pressing was only to be made to Spotify customers who have Paul McCartney as "featured artist" in their streaming setup, but now it's open to anyone who has the link to this item at the Paul McCartney Web Store.

Here's the supposedly secret link for USA.
Here's ditto for Europe.

Imagine - so what's new?

A quick guide to what's new and what's not.
So this may be a somewhat nerdy blog post, aimed at those Lennon collectors who also look to bootlegs for completion. What's new in the ultimate Imagine collection (details released today, see this page) and what's already out there, either on bootlegs or the Lennon Anthology. Occasional guest blogger Mike Carrera has kindly provided us with this friendly, colour coded guide.

Imagine 2018 Ultimate Collection Super DeLuxe Box set (4 CD+2 Blu-ray Audio) vs bootlegs and Lennon Anthology

by Mike Carrera

This is a quick guide using ONLY the ‘Super Deluxe’ box set 2018 to be released in October, to guide you through the many tracks: which ones are new, which could be and which aren’t? We are only focusing on the alternate material, and not on sound quality, which with this new release of course will surpass any bootlegs or past releases.

This guide will be updated in October once we get deep access to all the contents!

The ‘Super Deluxe’ presentation will be the only one having all the audio contents, and some tracks are exclusive for the Blu-Ray Audio discs accompanying this 4 CD box set.

All discs, including CDs and Blu-rays are divided into the following chapters:

a)Remixed: Stereo Album, Singles & Extras
b)Outtakes: Album, Singles & Extras
c)Quadrosonic Album Remastered (Blu Ray Exclusive)
d)Raw Studio Mixes: Outtakes-Live
e)Raw Studio Mixes: Extended album versions-Live
f) Elements Mixes
g)Evolution Documentary
h)Elliot Mintz Interviews with John & Yoko (Blu Ray Exclusive)

All the contents from the CDs will also be included on the Blu-Ray Audio discs, but the Blu-Rays will get extra features.

Super DeLuxe Box Set: CDs vs Blu-Ray Audio discs

CD 1 is also included on BLU RAY DISC 1. Blu Ray Exclusive: 5.1. mixes
CD 2 is also included on BLU RAY DISC 1 and BLU RAY DISC TWO. Blu Ray Exclusive: Six (6) songs from the ELEMENTS MIXES chapter.
CD 3 is also included on BLU RAY DISC 2. Blu Ray Exclusive: 5.1 mixes, One song LONGER from the EXTENDED VERSIONS and five (5) exclusive tracks from the OUTTAKES LIVE chapters.
CD 4 is also included on BLU RAY DISC 2. Blu Ray Exclusive: Six (6) tracks “Singles and Extras” from the EVOLUTION documentary.

For this quick review we will use only the following chapters or sections:

‘OUTTAKES’ is basically a selection of alternate takes from proper sessions or re-make sessions mostly, but also a few from rehearsal sessions, vocal overdubs or alternate vocal tracks.
‘RAW STUDIO OUTTAKES LIVE’ are basically takes with rough or live vocal guides from John, no overdubs, some are like ‘rehearsal’ takes, others are actual alternate takes/outtakes.
‘RAW STUDIO EXTENDED ALBUM VERSIONS LIVE are basically the same takes as used for the final master but with rough vocals or unedited (longer), no overdubs, reverb, tape delays, etc.
‘ELEMENTS’ are the multi track tapes combined to showcase some instruments or vocals (sometimes together, others just one element), these have nothing to do with channel separations from 5.1. mixes or Rockband mogg files, which are similar but not the same.
‘EVOLUTION’ are collages or montages starting from the demo takes in some cases, early rehearsals and alternate takes up to the final version.

Note: some songs have the same Take number twice or three times, meaning one comes from a first warm up session, the other from a re-make session starting counting takes again from the beginning, others use the final backing track from that take but with different vocal overdubs.

You will see the name of the song, take number or description, running time, under which section it will be included and whether it’s new or not.

This is an attempt to present the tracks in chronological order, as the box set has it all jumbled around, in many cases. And to the surprise of many bootleg collectors, the majority of the tracks on this new official set has never been released before!

this is the clear vinyl 2LP edition.

2018 DeLuxe Box Set vs bootlegs and Lennon Anthology

IMAGINE

Imagine (Original demo recorded at Ascot) 03:17 OUTTAKES

NEW  *Different from the ‘other’ demo circulating on bootlegs (3:36) which was also used (but edited) on the 1988 Warner Bros soundtrack "Imagine - The Movie" and can be seen in the ‘Gimme Some Truth’ documentary.

Imagine (Take 1) 03:25 RAW STUDIO OUTTAKES LIVE

Also known as "Version 1" on bootlegs. The Anthology version lacks the final comment from John lasting five seconds less (3:20), while the bootleg version is complete and with the same length of 3:25. So nothing new, but it will be little longer than the Anthology version.

Imagine (Take 1) 03:05 OUTTAKES

This is the re-make session, also known as “Version 2”. Lasting 3:12 on bootlegs, including some chat after the take, but it actually ends at 3:05. Nothing new here, apparently.

Imagine (Take 10) 03:12  OUTTAKES  NEW

Imagine 06:00 EVOLUTION NEW

Imagine (Strings only) 02:13 ELEMENTS NEW
Similar to some 5.1. mixes and Rockband multi tracks, but this mix is a new one.

Crippled Inside (Take 3) 03:50  OUTTAKES

NEW Re-make Session? (a Different Take 3 is on bootleg, including engineer’s slate  "Take Three", and lasting no longer than 1 minute because it's a breakdown take, so now we have a different Take 3, maybe one comes from the “Rehearsal/Live sessions” and the other from the ‘proper’ session?)

Crippled Inside (Take 6 alternate guitar solo) 03:47  OUTTAKES

NEW Re-make Session? (on bootlegs we have two different takes with this same length (3:47), one described as "Take 17" but without any slate it’s doubtful we are actually hearing a seventeenth take, so could be this Take 6, and the other described as "Rough Take", both with "alternate guitar solo", we will have to wait to get this upcoming official set to be able to really compare and decide.)

Partially NEW- From First Session? (Takes 5 (a false start) and Take 6 are already on the Anthology boxed set, but Take 6 has a fadeout there, so we will get around 2 minutes more of unheard stuff).

The 1998 John Lennon Anthology boxed set

Rediscovered Lennon demo launches Imagine campaign

While sifting through boxes upon boxes of the original tapes, engineer Rob Stevens discovered something truly remarkable that had gone unnoticed all these years. “Early 2016, during the gestation period of this project, I'm in the Lenono archives with my people going through tape boxes that have labeling that's unclear, misleading, or missing entirely”, says Stevens. “There's a 1" 8-track that says nothing more on the Ascot Sound label than John Lennon, the date, and the engineer (Phil McDonald), with DEMO on the spine.  No indication of what material was on the tape. One delicate transfer to digital later, the “Imagine” demo, subsequently enhanced superbly by Paul Hicks, appears within this comprehensive set. It was true serendipity.”

This completely never-before heard original demo, a sparse home recording of Lennon on piano and vocal playing one of his most famous songs, globally launches Imagine – The Ultimate Collection today and is available for streaming and for immediate download with all digital album pre-orders.

Lennon: Imagine & Gimme Some Truth Blu-ray & DVD

Due out October 5, Imagine & Gimme Some Truth
Available now to pre-order from Amazon are Blu-ray and region free DVD editions of "Imagine The Film" and "Gimme Some Truth - The Making of Imagine". They have both been out before, "Imagine The Film" only on video cassettes and laser discs, "Gimme Some Truth" also on DVD.

"Eagle Rock are delighted to announce the release of two films by John and Yoko, Imagine and Gimme Some Truth.  Both films, which focus on the Imagine era, have been hand restored frame-by-frame from the original film reels into HD, and their soundtracks have been remixed in glorious 5.1 surround sound, and remastered. Includes exclusive, never-before-seen bonus content on DVD and blu-ray. This is the first time both films have been commercially available at the same time."

Also on October 5, Geffen/UMe will release “John Lennon: Imagine: The Ultimate Box Set,” just ahead of what would have been Lennon’s 78th birthday on October 9. The remixed and remastered six-disc/140-track collection is fully authorized by Yoko Ono Lennon who oversaw the production and creative direction.

Spread across four CDs and two Blu-ray discs, this expanded edition of what many feel is the former Beatle’s best solo album includes new “Ultimate Mixes” of the iconic album — which, according to the announcement, reveal “whole new levels of sonic depth, definition and clarity to these timeless songs” — as well as unadorned Raw Studio Mixes, 5.1 surround sound mixes, and for the first time in nearly 50 years, a “Quadrasonic Album Mix,” presenting the original four-speaker “quadrophonic” mix in a format that was briefly popular with audiophiles in the 1970s.

The set also includes rare outtakes, isolated track elements and “The Evolution Documentary,” a track-by-track audio montage that details the journey of each song from demo to master recording via instructions, rehearsals, recordings, multitrack exploration and studio chatter.

Bonus tracks revealed

Target exclusive...in the USA, that is.
As you know, there is going to be a version of "Egypt Station" on CD with two bonus tracks. This edition will only be sold through Target in USA, HMV in the UK and in indie record stores elsewhere in Europe. They are also included on the SHM-CD in Japan. The two tracks are:
17. Get Started
18. Nothing For Free
and if that last title is a comment on the release plan, we agree.

HMV in the U.K.

Meanwhile, over at the Amazon Top 3 best selling mp3-files:

Fuh You is here

Fuh You is the new single from Paul McCartney's forthcoming album.
The newest single from the forthcoming record is now available on all digital/streaming platforms. Egypt Station’s estimated time of arrival is September 7, 2018 by way of Capitol Records.

Sharing a title with one of Paul’s own paintings, Egypt Station is the first full album of all-new McCartney music since 2013’s international chart-topping NEW. Preceded by two of its tracks just released as double A-sides – plaintive ballad  'I Don’t Know' and raucous stomper 'Come On To Me' — Egypt Station was recorded between Los Angeles, London and Sussex, and produced by Greg Kurstin (Adele, Beck, Foo Fighters) — with the exception of the newly available 'Fuh You,' which was produced by Ryan Tedder.

Paul recalls the process behind the new single: “With this one I was in the studio with Ryan Tedder whereas the rest of the album has been made with Greg Kurstin… We were just thinking of ideas and little pieces of melody and chords and the song just came together bit by bit. And then I would try and make some kind of sense of the story. So it was like ‘Come on baby now. Talk about yourself. Tell the truth, let me get to know you’ and basically I wanna know how you feel, you make me wanna go out and steal. I just want it for you. So that was the basic idea and it developed from there… sort of a love song, but a raunchy love song. There you go – fuh you."

In Ryan Tedder's interview he said it was originally "for you" , but with Paul's accent it sounded like "fuh you". Tedder said he liked the double entendre and the song sounding "naughty" so they changed it to " fuh you".

You may listen to and or download "Fuh You" from here.

Of course, there is a version available from Target in USA and HMV in the U.K. which has two extra tracks, we don't have titles for these yet. There's also a super deluxe edition of the album due out later in the year, rumoured to contain no fewer than 26 tracks.

Meanwhile, a new track from McCartney's forthcoming "Egypt Station" album is soon to be released. The sexually laden song "Fuh You" will be «departing» 15. August. So it’s train related lingo from the ad dept from now on.

The new McCartney album, in colours only available from Paul's own US store.

British magazine Record Collector have already listened to the full album, their review can be found here.

Imagine film restored for release

Film poster
Yoko Ono has a new product or two, the Imagine film and book. Remember the old 1972 television special where John&Yoko had made several music videos for songs from their albums, John's Imagine and Yoko's Fly? After John died, Yoko released a home video version on VHS, Beta and Laserdisk, which just contained John's songs. Well guess what? It's finally back! Eagle Rock Entertainment presents John Lennon & Yoko Ono: Imagine. Restored and remixed for cinema audiences with additional cinema-exclusive extras, and in spectacular Dolby Atmos in selected theatres, the film will receive a worldwide screening in cinemas from September 17, 2018.

Remastered frame-by-frame from the original film negative and completely remixed from the ground up, from the original first-generation audio multi-tracks in stunning Dolby Atmos and 7.1 Surround Sound, this collage of colour, sound, dream and reality stars John Lennon and Yoko Ono with George Harrison, Fred Astaire, Jack Nicholson, Andy Warhol, Dick Cavett and many more.

The film will be accompanied by exclusive cinema-only bonus footage featuring John Lennon performing tracks in the studio with George Harrison from The Beatles, Nicky Hopkins from The Rolling Stones, Alan White from Yes and dear friend Klaus Voormann.

More information about the film and the book, head on over to ImagineJohnYoko.com

The old laserdisks and video cassettes featured only John's songs.

Thank Your Lucky Stars episode discovered

Ringo Starr, Esq, opens the Lucky Stars Special with his band mates attending.
Saturday 14 November 1964: The Beatles rehearsed and recorded their contribution to the television show Thank Your Lucky Stars at Teddington Studios on this day. It was screened on ITV the following Saturday, 21 November 1964, from 5.50pm.
The group mimed to four songs: I Feel Fine, She's A Woman, I'm A Loser and Rock And Roll Music. There was no studio audience present.

Despite their numerous previous appearances on the show, by November 1964 The Beatles were so famous that it was a coup for the producers to have them even mime for an edition. In recognition of this, the show was renamed Lucky Stars Special.

The footage of the Beatles singing has existed for many years and has been used on many lookback shows. However, the in between stuff has been thought lost. Apple have never revealed if more existed but some years ago a brief moment was shown, of Brian Epstein introducing Sounds Incorporated which suggested that more of the show might exist.

Recently, the non-profit group Kaleidoscope, dedicated to recover old television footage previously though lost have recently been sent a DVC Pro tape from the USA and discovered it contained the studio recording for this 1964 Thank Your Lucky Stars show. There are the ABC time-clocks for separate studio sessions and the Beatles are fooling around in the studio with Brian.

We are happy that the entire program now is preserved, and hope that it will receive a future screening.

Double LP edition with a tri-fold cover
The above is a double LP with an exclusive "concertina" trifold cover. From this image, several of the song titles are on display:
Zooming in displays several song titles.

On an enlarged image of the above one, you can also read the full lyrics for one song:

Happy With You

I sat round all day
I used to get stoned
I liked to get wasted
But these days I don‘t
I got lots of good thing: to do, oh yeah

l walked around angry
i used to Feel bad
But nowadays my days
don ‘t have to be sad
‘cos: I'm happy, with you
I got lots of good thing: to do, oh yeah

Like, hear the high clear robin sing
Walk a bluebell carpet
Watch the children playing games
Catch a moon and drop it
Hear the gentle mantle roll
On a Frosty morning
See the migthy Ocean break
Like a sailor Warning

l used to drink so much
Forget To come ome
I lied to my doctir
But these days I don't
‘cos: I'm happy, with you
I got lots of good thing: to do, oh yeah

Throw a pooketful of coins in the Trevi tountain
See an ice cold running stream
Rushing down the mountain
Hear a new born baby lamb
Calling tor its mother
loving one another

I sat round all day
I used to get stoned
I liked to get wasted
But these days I don‘t
I got lots of good thing: to do, oh yeah

Then there's this image, with two LPs sticking out from the cover.
And this one, with one vinyl disc. HMV Japan described this version yesterday,
and the album sleeve is just double, not trifold.

Apart from the Barnes & Noble exclusive red colour 2LP edition depicted first in this blog post, there's also another colour variation announced but not described, so we don't know which colour it might be. Here's how it's presented:
But what's the colour?
Update: Paul McCartney has posted this image, which may or may not refer to the above edition:

In the description, this blue and orange vinyl edition is supposedly exclusive to Paul McCartney's online store (and only available in the USA, as well), whereas the nondescript colour edition above it is available from other stores as well.

And then there is this Target exclusive, with two extra songs.

Target got themselves another exclusive.
+ 2 extra songs on this CD edition.
In the United Kingdom, the Target version with 2 extra songs is known as the HMV version:
From HMV comes a version with 2 bonus tracks and no, they don't ship it abroad.
Delivery to the UK only, which means you will have to look for it on ebay, where there are plenty of sellers who profit on this quite unnecessary policy by the record company store.

There's a rumour that elsewhere in Europe, this CD with 2 bonus tracks will be available from indie record stores, and not from web shops.
